--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 1: FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Functional Architecture:

   - The LM36923 is an ultra-compact, high-efficiency boost converter specifically tailored to power multi-string LCD backlights in modern smartphones.

   - Internally integrates a low Rds(on) power switch and control loop operating at 500 kHz or 1.0 MHz programmable switching frequencies.

   - Contains three precision matched, low-dropout current sinks (LED1, LED2, LED3) capable of sinking up to 25 mA each with better than 2% inter-string current matching.

   - Features an 11-bit dimming engine allowing 2048 smooth exponential or linear brightness control steps managed via I2C interface or external logic-level PWM input.

2. Pinout & Signal Mapping (12-Bump DSBGA, 0.40mm Pitch):

   - Row A:

     * Bump A1 (LED1): Current sink input for LED String 1 (Cathode return).

     * Bump A2 (SDA): I2C bidirectional serial data line.

     * Bump A3 (SCL): I2C serial clock input.

   - Row B:

     * Bump B1 (LED2): Current sink input for LED String 2 (Cathode return).

     * Bump B2 (GND): Analog and power ground reference.

     * Bump B3 (SW): High-current internal switching node connected to external boost inductor (typically 4.7 µH to 10 µH).

   - Row C:

     * Bump C1 (LED3): Current sink input for LED String 3 (Cathode return).

     * Bump C2 (GND): Internal logic ground reference.

     * Bump C3 (OUT): Boost output and over-voltage protection (OVP) feedback sense node (connected to boost output capacitor and display connector Anode).

   - Row D:

     * Bump D1 (PWM): External pulse-width modulation brightness control input.

     * Bump D2 (HWEN): Hardware enable input (Active HIGH; pulls IC out of shutdown).

     * Bump D3 (IN): Power supply input rail (2.5V to 5.5V, connected to VPH_PWR / VBAT).

3. Power Conversion Mechanism:

   - Battery rail (VPH_PWR / VBAT, 3.8V nominal) passes through an external power inductor into the SW pin (B3).

   - When enabled by HWEN (1.8V) and I2C commands from the CPU, the internal high-speed FET switches to ramp current in the inductor.

   - Rectified boost voltage appears on the OUT pin (C3), producing an output rail between 15V and 28V depending on the number of series LEDs in the screen panel.

   - The current sinks on LED1, LED2, and LED3 regulate cathode return current to ground, maintaining uniform screen brightness without flicker.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 2: BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. No Backlight / Dark Screen (Flashlight Image Visible):

   - The device turns on, vibrates, plays notification sounds, and is detected by a computer.

   - Shining a strong flashlight onto the display surface reveals the brand logo, lock screen, and icons, but the screen does not illuminate.

   - Root Causes: Blown internal switching FET in LM36923, open/cracked boost inductor, shorted high-voltage ceramic filter capacitor on the OUT line, or open series ferrite bead on the display connector.

2. Partial or Dim Backlight (Uneven Screen Illumination):

   - The screen lights up faintly or only one side/corner is illuminated.

   - Root Causes: Open circuit or dry solder ball on one of the cathode pins (LED1, LED2, or LED3), forcing that particular LED string into shutdown while others remain partially operational.

3. Backlight Blinks Once at Boot and Shuts Off:

   - Phone displays the boot logo with light for ~0.5 to 1 second, then the backlight abruptly dies while the phone keeps booting.

   - Root Causes: Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) triggered because of an open LED line in the display or broken feedback trace on OUT (C3), causing the driver to halt switching to protect itself.

4. Primary Power Rail Short / Complete Dead Phone:

   - Internal silicon breakdown between the IN pin (D3) or SW pin (B3) and Ground.

   - Result: VPH_PWR / VBAT is dead shorted to ground (0.000V diode reading). Connecting a DC power supply causes immediate overcurrent draw prior to pressing the power button.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 3: STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Drop Readings in mV):

   - Multimeter Setting: Diode Mode. RED probe on clean PCB Ground shield, BLACK probe on test points:

     * Pin IN (Input Cap C_IN): ~380 mV to 480 mV (0.000V indicates battery rail short).

     * Pin SW (Switching Inductor pad): ~380 mV to 480 mV (must be virtually identical to IN due to inductor DC continuity).

     * Pin OUT (High-Voltage Boost Output Cap C_OUT / Anode): ~550 mV to 750 mV (0.000V indicates cracked/shorted high-voltage cap).

     * Pins LED1, LED2, LED3 (Cathode lines to FPC connector): ~600 mV to 800 mV (readings across all three lines must be balanced within ±15 mV).

     * Pins SDA / SCL (I2C communication): ~450 mV to 650 mV (closely balanced).

     * Pin HWEN (Hardware Enable): ~500 mV to 650 mV.

2. Hot Testing (Live Voltage Measurements with Display Connected):

   - Power State 1: Battery or DC Power Supply connected, Screen Off / Standby:

     * Voltage at IN (D3): Battery voltage (~3.8V - 4.2V).

     * Voltage at SW (B3): Battery voltage (~3.8V - 4.2V).

     * Voltage at OUT (C3): Battery voltage (~3.8V - 4.2V pass-through).

   - Power State 2: Phone Powered On, Screen Active:

     * Voltage at HWEN (D2): Must rise to logic HIGH (1.8V).

     * Voltage at OUT (C3): Must immediately boost from ~3.8V up to +18.0V - 25.0V DC.

     * Diagnostic Verdict: If HWEN is 1.8V and IN is 3.8V, but OUT remains stuck at 3.8V during boot, the LM36923 is defective, its boost inductor is cracked, or the I2C bus is not communicating.

3. Short Isolation & Component Verification:

   - If OUT line is shorted (0V): DO NOT inject high voltage. Inject a safe 3.0V / 2.0A onto the OUT capacitor using rosin smoke or thermal camera. 90% of the time, a shorted ceramic capacitor on the high-voltage filter line will melt the rosin before the IC.

   - Check the Boost Inductor: Perform an inductance or low-resistance continuity check across the coil (resistance should be under 0.2 Ω). If scorched or cracked, replace with a matched 4.7 µH / 10 µH shielded power inductor rated for at least 1.5A saturation current.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
