           SAMSUNG S2DPS01 DISPLAY LIGHT & POWER IC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & SURROUNDING CIRCUIT:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Boost Step-Up Configuration:

  * Works in direct integration with a 10uH or 22uH power boost inductor, high-speed switching Schottky

    diode, and 35V–50V smoothing filter capacitors.

  * Inputs: System Power rail (VPH_PWR / VBAT, ~3.8V to 4.2V DC), Display PWM Brightness control from CPU,

    and I2C digital control bus.

  * Outputs: High-voltage Backlight Anode rail (LED_A / LED+, +20V to +28V DC), and Dual Cathode (LED_K1/K2)

    current sink regulation lines.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS (HARDWARE FAILURES):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Complete Backlight Failure (Dark Screen with Working Graphics):

  * The phone turns on, rings, vibrates, and sound works. Shining a torchlight on the screen faintly reveals

    the Samsung logo and icons, but the screen illumination remains completely black.

- Dim or Flickering Display:

  * The screen backlight is very weak even with brightness turned up to 100%, or flickers intermittently

    due to damaged internal current sink FETs.

- Primary VPH / VBAT Short Circuit:

  * Moisture or an internal silicon puncture on the switching node shorts the main VPH rail to ground,

    tripping the DC power supply and preventing the phone from powering on.

- Phone Reboots at Samsung Logo:

  * Lack of proper feedback signals on the I2C control bus causes the display initialization driver

    in the kernel to panic and reboot.

3. MULTIMETER DIAGNOSTICS & TESTING PROCEDURE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode - Battery & Screen Disconnected):

   1. Place RED probe on motherboard Ground (metal shield frame), probe with BLACK probe:

      - Display Connector LED_A (Backlight Anode pin): Normal diode reading is ~450mV to 650mV. (0.000V = Shorted capacitor/diode).

      - Display Connector LED_K (Cathode pins): Normal reading is ~500mV to 700mV.

      - Boost Inductor Input / Output: Normal reading is ~350mV to 450mV.

      - S2DPS01 VPH Input Capacitors: Normal reading is ~350mV to 450mV.

   2. Short Circuit Isolation:

      - If the LED_A line or any capacitor near S2DPS01 reads 0.000V with a continuous beep, remove the

        filter capacitor or S2DPS01 to check if the short clears.

B. Hot Testing (Screen & Battery Connected, Phone Powered ON):

   1. Power on the phone and measure DC Voltage at the Anode (LED_A) test point:

      - While display is actively on: Voltage must rise from battery level (3.8V) up to **+20.0V ~ +26.0V DC**.

      - If voltage remains stuck at 3.8V–4.2V and does not boost, check the boost coil continuity, diode,

        and S2DPS01 enable signal.

4. MICRO-SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Stencil Selection:

  * Use a dedicated Samsung A-series / Universal BGA stencil (0.35mm / 0.4mm pitch, AMAOE SAM series).

- Chip Removal:

  * Shield surrounding plastic connectors and sensitive components with thermal Kapton tape.

  * Apply a small droplet of premium RMA / NC-559 tacky flux around S2DPS01.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 340°C, Airflow 20% – 25%.

  * Heat evenly in circular motions for 12 to 15 seconds. Lift gently with fine micro-tweezers.

- Motherboard Pad Cleaning:

  * Apply Sn63/Pb37 leaded solder wire with a fine bevel tip at 280°C to soften factory lead-free solder.

  * Clean pads flat and uniform using micro copper desoldering wick and flux. Clean thoroughly with 99% pure IPA.

- Chip Reballing:

  * Place S2DPS01 under the stencil apertures; apply medium-temperature 183°C solder paste smoothly.

  * Reflow with hot air at 290°C – 300°C with low airflow (15%) until uniform, bright solder balls form.

- Installation:

  * Apply a microscopic film of tacky flux on the PCB footprint.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation marker (dot) on S2DPS01 precisely with the motherboard silkscreen guide.

  * Solder with hot air at 310°C – 320°C with 15%–20% airflow until the chip sinks into place and self-aligns.

  * Allow 3 minutes of passive cooling before connecting the display and testing backlight illumination.
