SAMSUNG S2MU004X-C SUB-PMIC & CHARGER IC DETAILED REWORK GUIDE
====================================================================================================
1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Sub-PMIC & Secondary Power Rail Generation:
* Operates as an essential companion to the main Exynos PMIC on Samsung Galaxy A and J-series motherboards.
* It houses synchronous buck step-down regulators and low-noise LDO power channels supplying peripheral
hardware blocks (Touchscreen digitizer, OLED display bias, front/rear camera ISP rails, and sensors).
- Type-C Charging & Power Path Management:
* Oversees USB Type-C CC line detection and manages the battery charging profile (CC/CV).
* Decouples battery voltage from the system bus (VPH_PWR / VDD_SYS) via internal power-path MOSFETs,
allowing instant boot when plugged into a charger even with a zero-volts drained battery.
- Boot Sequencing & Sleep Wake-Up:
* Communicates via I2C with the Application Processor (AP). If S2MU004X-C fails to report steady power-good
status on its auxiliary rails, the phone aborts system startup or freezes in a permanent restart loop.
2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS (خرابی کی نشانیاں):
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Dead Phone / No Power (موبائل کا بالکل آن نہ ہونا):
* The device shows no charging logo, zero vibration, and draws 0.00A on a USB charger.
- Frozen Current on DC Power Supply (ڈی سی میٹر پر ریڈنگ رک جانا):
* When the power key is pressed, current draw climbs to 30mA–60mA or 100mA–140mA and remains permanently
stuck without booting the operating system.
- Dead After Flash (سافٹ ویئر کے بعد فون کا ڈیڈ ہونا):
* Motherboard fails to wake up from deep sleep after a firmware flash because S2MU004X-C fails to initialize
its peripheral LDO voltages.
- Fake Charging (فیک چارجنگ):
* Screen shows the lightning bolt charging icon, but battery percentage refuses to increase or drains
slowly (USB tester draws only 0.05A–0.15A).
- Hang on Samsung Logo / Continuous Bootloop:
* Phone turns on, displays the first Samsung logo, and restarts indefinitely due to ripple on the camera
or sensor power rail generated by this chip.
- Primary Bus Short / Excessive Overheating:
* S2MU004X-C becomes scorching hot immediately upon connecting the battery.
3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):
1. Place Multimeter in Diode Mode. Connect RED probe to PCB Ground (Shielding frame), test with
BLACK probe around S2MU004X-C:
- VBUS Input Filter Capacitors: Normal ~500mV – 650mV (0.000V = dead short on Type-C 5V rail).
- System Bus (VPH_PWR / VDD_SYS) Capacitors: Normal ~360mV – 480mV.
- External Buck Inductors (Output Coils): Normal ~320mV – 460mV.
- VBAT Battery Connection Terminal: Normal ~380mV – 490mV.
- LDO Output Bypass Capacitors: Normal ~420mV – 650mV.
- I2C Communication Lines (SDA / SCL): Normal ~450mV – 650mV.
2. Short-Circuit Verification:
- If VPH_PWR or VBUS reads 0.000V, inject 3.8V DC (limited to 1.5A). Observe with thermal camera or
rosin flux: if S2MU004X-C illuminates white-hot, desolder the IC.
B. Hot Testing (USB Type-C Charger Connected):
1. Connect verified 5V/9V Samsung fast charger:
- Verify 5.0V or 9.0V DC appears on the VBUS input capacitor.
- Check output inductor: Stable system voltage (3.6V to 4.35V DC) must be generated.
- Check VBAT battery connector pins: Must detect active charging voltage.
- If input voltage is verified, but output coil reads 0V with 0.00A current drawn, S2MU004X-C
is cracked, shorted, or defective internally.
4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- IC Desoldering:
* Mask surrounding plastic battery connectors, SIM sockets, and cameras with aluminum/Kapton heat tape.
* Apply high-grade, non-corrosive RMA tacky flux around the perimeter of S2MU004X-C.
* Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 345°C, airflow 30% – 35% with a fine nozzle.
* Heat in steady, tight circles for 15–20 seconds. Touch gently with precision tweezers; once solder balls
melt completely, lift straight up without sliding across PCB pads.
- Motherboard Pad Cleaning:
* Melt leaded solder paste (Sn63/Pb37, 183°C) onto the pads to dilute factory high-melt unleaded alloy.
* Flatten pads completely using fine copper desoldering braid and a soldering iron set to 280°C – 290°C.
* Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect under a microscope to confirm no
bridging or missing traces.
- Reballing Procedure:
* Secure a dedicated Samsung S2MU004X-C stencil or universal 0.35mm/0.4mm pitch BGA stencil.
* Spread 183°C fine-grain leaded solder paste smoothly into all apertures.
* Heat with hot air set to 280°C with low airflow (15%–20%) until bright, uniform solder spheres form.
- Placement & Final Reflow:
* Apply an ultra-thin layer of tacky flux across the PCB footprint.
* Align Pin 1 index dot precisely with the motherboard silkscreen corner marker.
* Reflow at 305°C – 315°C with 30% airflow; the chip will automatically pull into center alignment via
molten solder surface tension.
* Allow motherboard to cool naturally for 3–5 minutes before connecting battery and testing DC power boot.
