SAMSUNG S5201 AUXILIARY POWER & AUDIO POWER IC REWORK GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Dedicated Auxiliary Power Distribution in 5G Architectures:

  * In 5G smartphones like the Galaxy S10 5G, the addition of complex multi-band RF front-ends and

high-output stereo smart amplifiers causes significant power overhead.

  * S5201 functions as a dedicated Auxiliary PMIC (Sub-PMIC). It converts primary battery line power

(VBAT / VSYS) into stabilized, low-ripple secondary supply rails for the audio power amplifiers (PA)

    and secondary system sensors.

- Low-Noise Audio Subsystem Power Supply:

  * Contains precision low-dropout regulators (LDOs) engineered specifically to eliminate audio buzz,

hum, and high-frequency noise interference from cellular transmission bursts.

- Power Sequencing & Bus Control:

  * Synchronized with the Main PMIC (MAX77705) and Application Processor via dedicated enable lines

and I2C digital control, preventing power spikes during startup.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Complete Audio Failure (No Sound / No Mic / No Ringer):

  * Bottom loudspeaker, top earpiece, and microphones completely stop functioning because the audio

amplification rail generated by S5201 has collapsed.

- Phone Dead / Stuck on Low Boot Current (0.04A–0.09A):

  * Triggering the power key on a DC bench power supply shows current jumping to ~0.04A–0.09A and freezing,

failing to initialize CPU handshaking because a required auxiliary rail is absent.

- Auto-Restart / Boot Loop on Samsung Logo:

  * Phone powers on, displays the "Samsung Galaxy S10 5G" logo, and instantly reboots in an infinite loop.

- Secondary Rail Short to Ground:

  * Surrounding SMD filter capacitors measure 0.000V in diode mode to ground. The main PMIC detects

abnormal load and shuts down the entire phone to prevent PCB burn.

- Extreme Overheating on Motherboard:

  * S5201 becomes scorching hot immediately upon pressing the power button.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place RED probe on motherboard ground (metal shielding frame)

and use BLACK probe to test capacitors surrounding S5201:

      - Main Input Line (VBAT / VSYS): Normal reading is ~350mV to 520mV (0.000V indicates a dead short).

      - Regulated Audio / Auxiliary Output Lines: Normal readings range from ~400mV to 650mV.

      - I2C Communication Lines (SDA / SCL): Normal reading is ~480mV to 650mV with matching balanced values.

   2. Short-Circuit Verification:

      - If surrounding filter capacitors measure 0.000V, apply rosin smoke across S5201. Inject 1.8V to 3.0V DC

(limited to 1.5A) on the shorted line. If S5201 melts the rosin first, remove the chip from the PCB.

B. Hot Testing (Connected to DC Bench Power Supply):

   1. Press the power button to initiate boot and measure output points around S5201:

      - Check input capacitor: Must show steady primary battery voltage (3.8V to 4.2V DC).

      - Check output test points: Must measure steady regulated voltages (typically 1.8V, 2.8V, and 3.3V DC).

      - If input voltage is verified but none of the regulated secondary voltages appear during boot, S5201 is dead.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Micro WLCSP BGA Package:

  * S5201 is a fragile wafer-level micro-BGA chip with bare silicon glass on top. Uneven localized heating

or mechanical pressure from tweezers will crack the silicon die.

- IC Desoldering Procedure:

  * Protect adjacent delicate connectors and memory chips using Kapton tape or metal heat shields.

  * Apply a small amount of non-corrosive RMA tacky flux around the perimeter of S5201.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 340°C, Airflow 25%–30%.

  * Apply heat in gentle circular motions for 15–18 seconds. Once solder balls liquefy completely, lift

the chip straight upward with micro-tweezers without dragging across pads.

- Motherboard Pad Preparation:

  * Apply leaded solder paste (Sn63/Pb37, 183°C) to dilute high-temperature factory lead-free alloy.

  * Clean and level the motherboard micro-pads using fine copper desoldering braid and a soldering iron at 280°C.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); verify under a microscope that no solder mask

is torn or bridged between pads.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Secure the replacement S5201 into a dedicated Samsung S10 / universal BGA stencil (0.12mm thickness).

  * Smoothly pack 183°C fine-grain leaded solder paste into all stencil apertures.

  * Heat with hot air set to 280°C with low airflow (15%) until bright, uniform solder spheres form.

- Placement & Final Reflow:

  * Spread a microscopic film of tacky flux on the PCB footprint.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation index dot with the motherboard silkscreen corner marker.

  * Reflow at 305°C – 315°C with 25% airflow. The chip will automatically pull into center alignment via

    molten solder surface tension.

  * Allow the motherboard to cool naturally for 3 to 5 minutes before connecting DC power and testing audio/boot functions.
