           SAMSUNG S5204 (S2MPS24) MAIN PMIC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC & REWORK GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Primary Power Management Core:

  * Manages battery power step-down conversion for the ultra-fast Samsung Exynos 2100 (5nm) octa-core CPU.

  * Multi-Phase Synchronous Buck Regulators:

    - VDD_CPU / VDD_ARM: Dynamically scaled CPU core rails with Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS 0.75V to 1.15V).

    - VDD_MIF: High-speed LPDDR5 RAM power rail (~1.1V to 1.2V).

    - VDD_INT: Digital internal core logic supply (~0.85V to 0.95V).

- High-PSRR Linear LDO Regulators:

  * Generates dedicated 1.8V, 2.8V, and 3.0V supply lines for modem baseband interfaces, display timing

    controllers, UFS flash storage, and system sensors.

- Master System Power Sequencing:

  * Monitors power button status (PWR_ON pulled low to GND).

  * Houses internal RTC clock buffer (32.768kHz oscillator).

  * Manages power-good (PG), reset (RESET_N), and CPU watchdog handshaking (PS_HOLD).

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Phone Completely Dead (Zero Current / 0.000A):

  * Motherboard connected to DC bench power supply draws 0.000A. Pressing the power key produces zero

    response or a momentary 0.01A pulse because S5204 fails to initiate master power sequencing.

- Boot Current Freeze / Stagnant Hang (0.06A – 0.12A Freeze):

  * Pressing the power button causes current to rise to 60mA–120mA and lock up permanently. Caused by a

    missing VDD_CPU buck voltage, missing LPDDR5 memory rail, or broken 32.768kHz RTC clock oscillator.

- Primary Short Circuit on VBAT / VSYS:

  * Internal high-side switching FET breakdown connects the battery line directly to ground (0.000V in

    diode mode), causing the DC bench power supply to trip or beep immediately.

- Boot-Looping / Auto Restart on Samsung Galaxy Logo:

  * Phone starts, shows the Samsung Galaxy boot logo, and instantly restarts or shuts down due to voltage

    drop on CPU core buck inductors under processor boot load.

- Severe Motherboard Overheating:

  * S5204 becomes burning hot to the touch within 2 seconds of connecting DC power.

3. MULTIMETER DIAGNOSTIC & VOLTAGE TESTING:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode - Battery Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place RED probe on motherboard ground (shield frame) and touch

      components surrounding S5204 with the BLACK probe:

      - VBAT / Main VSYS Input Capacitors: Normal reading is ~380mV to 480mV. (0.000V indicates a dead short).

      - Surrounding Buck Inductors (Large gray coils):

        * CPU Core Coils: Normal readings are ~120mV to 250mV (low impedance is normal for modern 5nm CPU

          cores, but must NOT read dead short 0.000V).

        * LPDDR5 Memory Coil (VDD_MIF): Normal reading is ~280mV to 380mV.

        * System Logic Coil (VDD_INT): Normal reading is ~260mV to 350mV.

      - Peripheral LDO Capacitors: Normal readings range between ~420mV and 650mV.

      - Power Key Pin: Normal diode reading is ~500mV to 650mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Verification:

      - If any coil reads 0.000V, apply rosin smoke across S5204 and inject safe voltage (1.0V on CPU core line,

        or 3.8V on VBAT with 1.5A limit). If S5204 melts rosin first, it is internally shorted.

B. Hot Testing (Operating Voltage Checks with Motherboard Powered via DC Power Supply):

   1. Connect motherboard to bench DC supply at 4.0V:

      - Check VBAT Input: Steady 4.0V DC reaching S5204 input filtering capacitors.

      - Check Power Key Pin: Must read steady high logic (~1.8V). Pressing the power key must drop this to 0.0V.

      - Check Buck Coils on Power Button Trigger:

        * VDD_CPU must output ~0.8V to 1.15V DC.

        * VDD_INT must output ~0.9V DC.

        * VDD_MIF must output ~1.1V to 1.2V DC.

   2. Diagnostic Evaluation:

      - If input voltage and power-key trigger are confirmed, but all buck output rails remain 0.0V, S5204 is

        defective or has cracked solder balls underneath.

4. MICRO-SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Thermal Protection & Masking:

  * In Galaxy S21 series, the Exynos 2100 processor and UFS memory are located in close proximity on

    the multi-layer motherboard.

  * Mask the CPU and storage chips thoroughly with dual layers of Kapton tape and heat-reflective aluminum foil.

- Desoldering (Removal):

  * Apply a small amount of non-corrosive RMA / NC-559 tacky flux around S5204 edges.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 345°C, Airflow 25% – 30%.

  * Apply heat uniformly in circular motions across the chip body for 20 to 25 seconds.

  * Gently touch the corner with micro-tweezers; as soon as all solder balls melt, lift the IC vertically.

- Motherboard Pad Cleaning:

  * Apply 183°C leaded solder wire (Sn63/Pb37) to the motherboard footprint using a soldering iron at 280°C

    to dilute remaining factory lead-free solder.

  * Clean all PCB pads flat and smooth using micro copper desoldering wick and flux.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect under microscope for pad integrity.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated Samsung S21 series / Exynos 2100 PMIC stencil or high-precision universal 0.35mm BGA stencil.

  * Fill the apertures evenly with 183°C fine-grain leaded solder paste.

  * Reflow using hot air at 280°C and low airflow (15%) until bright spherical solder balls form across all pads.

- Installation:

  * Apply an ultra-thin film of tacky flux on the cleaned motherboard pads.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation index dot on S5204 precisely with the silkscreen corner mark on the PCB.

  * Solder with hot air at 310°C – 320°C with 20% airflow. Watch the chip self-center via molten solder surface tension.

  * Give a delicate micro-touch; it must spring back to center immediately.

  * Allow the motherboard to cool naturally for 3 to 5 minutes before applying DC power for testing.
