SAMSUNG S527S MAIN POWER IC (PMIC) HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC & REWORK GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & POWER DOMAINS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Core Function:

  * Primary power distribution unit for Samsung Exynos-based mainboards.

  * Generates high-efficiency low-voltage Buck outputs (VDD_INT, VDD_MIF, VDD_CPU_LITTLE, VDD_CPU_BIG, VDD_G3D).

  * Generates multiple Low Dropout (LDO) rails for system clocks, eMMC/UFS memory power, audio codec,

    and analog sensor blocks.

  * Manages Sleep/Wake state transitions, Power Key trigger detection, and hardware reset lines.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS (BOARD LEVEL FAILURES):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Complete Dead Phone (0.00A or Stuck at Low Current):

  * When connected to DC Power Supply, pressing the power button draws a low, frozen current (e.g.

0.02A – 0.08A) without booting into CPU initialization (missing secondary Buck voltages).

- Full Primary VPH / VBAT Short Circuit:

  * Phone trips the DC power supply immediately upon connection (drawing 2.0A–4.0A+), with S527S heating

up rapidly under thermal camera due to internal silicon puncture.

- Stuck on Samsung Boot Logo / Continuous Rebooting:

  * One of the essential CPU or RAM core Buck power rails is unstable, dropping below threshold under

    initial Android OS load.

- Charging Failure / False Charging:

  * System does not recognize battery voltage states properly, preventing the secondary charging IC

    from delivering charge current.

3. MULTIMETER DIAGNOSTICS & TESTING PROCEDURE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place RED probe on motherboard Ground (shielding frame) and

test surrounding peripheral Buck coils and filter capacitors with the BLACK probe:

      - VREG_1.8V Always / High LDOs: ~400mV to 550mV (Normal)

      - VDD_MIF / VDD_INT Buck Coils: ~250mV to 380mV (Normal)

      - CPU Core Buck Coils (Low Resistance Rails): ~80mV to 180mV (Normal)

   2. Short Circuit Detection:

      - If any Buck coil reads 0.000V with continuous continuity beep, verify whether the short is inside

S527S or on the CPU side by injecting 1.0V (max 2A) on the shorted rail while inspecting with

        thermal camera or rosin smoke.

B. Hot Testing (Power Supply Connected & Power Button Triggered):

   1. Apply 4.0V DC to the battery connector / VPH line.

   2. Trigger the Power Key and measure voltage on all surrounding large SMD Buck coils:

      - Look for 1.8V (VREG_1.8V), 1.1V (Core logic), 0.8V–0.9V (Processor power).

      - If VBAT/VPH is entering S527S, the power key line drops to 0V when pressed, but ZERO output

voltages are generated across the coils, the S527S PMIC is defective or unpowered.

4. MICRO-SOLDERING, REBALLING & REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Dedicated BGA Stencil:

  * Use dedicated Samsung Exynos / AMAOE stencil (e.g., AMAOE SAM-12, SAM-14, or universal 0.35/0.4mm pitch).

- Chip Removal:

  * Remove metal shields carefully. Apply medium-viscosity tacky flux (NC-559 or Kingbo) around S527S.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 340°C – 350°C, Airflow 25% – 30%.

  * Heat evenly in small circles for 20 to 25 seconds until all balls liquify. Lift gently with micro-tweezers.

- Board Pad Preparation:

  * Lower melting point of motherboard pads using Sn63/Pb37 (183°C) leaded solder wire with a knife tip at 280°C.

  * Clean pads level and flat using premium copper desoldering wick and flux. Clean residue with 99% IPA.

- Chip Reballing:

  * Secure S527S under the dedicated stencil.

  * Spread 183°C medium-temperature solder paste uniformly into all stencil apertures. Wipe excess paste clean.

  * Dry hot air reflow at 290°C – 300°C with low airflow (15%) until shiny, uniform solder spheres form.

- Chip Installation:

  * Apply a micro-layer of flux onto the motherboard footprint.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation marker (dot) on the S527S chip with the motherboard silkscreen guide.

  * Solder with hot air at 320°C – 330°C, airflow 20%. Watch the chip settle down and self-align on the

molten solder balls; apply a gentle sideways nudge with tweezers to confirm surface tension lock.

  * Allow 3–5 minutes for full passive cooling before testing boot current on DC power supply.
