SAMSUNG S925D2 AUDIO CODEC & IF IC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & BOARD ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Audio Processing Domain:

  * Contains internal DACs, ADCs, and class-D audio amplifiers.

  * Directly drives the loud speaker output, in-call receiver, and manages primary/secondary microphone inputs.

  * Communicates with the main AP (Application Processor) via I2S / Slimbus audio data protocol and

    I2C control bus.

- IF / Network Sub-circuit:

  * In specific Samsung models, it acts as an intermediate frequency routing and filtering chip

bridging the transceiver and baseband processor.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS (COMMON HARDWARE FAILURES):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- In-Call Sound & Microphone Failure (Sound Problem):

  * During voice or WhatsApp calls, neither your voice is transmitted (Mic dead) nor the caller's voice is

audible (Earpiece mute), while media sound may or may not function.

- Loudspeaker Distortion or Completely Dead:

  * Ringtone, music, or speakerphone produces cracked sound, sudden clicking noises, or no audio output at all.

- Headphone Mode Stuck:

  * The phone shows the headphone/earphone icon on the top status bar even when nothing is plugged into the 3.5mm jack.

- No Service / Signal Search (IF Role):

  * When operating in the IF circuit, cold solder joints under S925D2 can cause continuous "Emergency Calls Only"

    or "Searching..." status.

- Secondary Short Circuit / Phone Restarting:

  * Internal breakdown of internal LDO rails pulls down the 1.8V audio supply, causing the phone to hang on the

Samsung logo or draw high current on boot.

3. MULTIMETER DIAGNOSTICS & TESTING PROCEDURE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Place RED probe on motherboard Ground (metal shield), probe surrounding components with BLACK probe:

      - Speaker Filter Coils / Caps: Normal diode value is ~400mV to 550mV on both positive and negative legs.

      - Earpiece Receiver Lines: Normal diode value is ~500mV to 650mV (must be well balanced).

      - MIC_BIAS Line: Normal diode value is ~550mV to 700mV.

      - I2S Audio Bus (BCLK, WCLK, DOUT, DIN): Normal reading is ~450mV to 580mV.

   2. Short Circuit Detection:

      - If any coil or bypass capacitor directly adjacent to S925D2 reads 0.000V with continuous beep,

remove the component or verify if S925D2 is heating under thermal camera.

B. Hot Testing (Operating Voltage Checks):

   1. Power on the phone, play ringtone or make a test call:

      - Measure Power Supply Pins (VDD_1.8V): Must read steady +1.8V DC.

      - Measure VBAT / VPA (Power supply for speaker amp): Must measure battery voltage (~3.8V to 4.2V DC).

      - Measure MIC_BIAS test point: Must measure ~1.8V to 2.8V DC during microphone activation.

   2. Diagnostic Verification:

      - If all supply voltages (1.8V and VBAT) are present, earpiece and speaker coils are healthy, but zero

audio output/input is generated, the S925D2 IC is defective and must be replaced.

4. MICRO-SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Stencil Selection:

  * Use a dedicated Samsung Exynos / Universal BGA stencil (0.35mm / 0.4mm pitch, AMAOE SAM series).

- Chip Removal:

  * Shield surrounding sensitive ICs (CPU, eMMC/UFS, Power IC) with heat insulation tape.

  * Apply a droplet of high-temperature tacky flux (NC-559).

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 340°C – 350°C, Airflow 25% – 30%.

  * Heat in even circular motions for 15 to 20 seconds. Lift gently once the solder balls liquefy.

- PCB Pad Cleanup:

  * Use leaded solder wire (Sn63/Pb37) and a chisel soldering tip at 280°C to lower the pad melting point.

  * Clean the motherboard pads completely flat using quality copper desoldering wick and flux. Clean with 99% IPA.

- Chip Reballing:

  * Align the chip under the stencil apertures; apply medium-temperature 183°C solder paste evenly.

  * Reflow with hot air at 290°C – 300°C with low airflow (15%) until uniform, shiny solder balls are formed.

- Installation:

  * Apply an ultra-thin layer of tacky flux over the PCB pads.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation dot of the S925D2 chip accurately with the motherboard silkscreen guide.

  * Solder with hot air at 320°C – 330°C with 20% airflow until the chip self-centers and locks into position.

  * Let the board cool down naturally for 3 minutes before testing in-call sound and audio functions.
