UNISOC / SPREADTRUM SC2721G MAIN PMIC REWORK & DIAGNOSTIC HARDWARE GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Multi-Channel Synchronous Buck Switching Regulators:

  * Converts raw battery power (VBAT ~3.8V to 4.2V) into high-current, low-voltage processor rails:

    1. VDD_CORE: Supplies the octa-core Cortex-A55 CPU cluster (0.80V to 1.05V DC with dynamic scaling).

    2. VDD_MEM / VDD_DDR: Supplies the high-speed LPDDR3 / LPDDR4X memory interconnect (1.1V to 1.2V DC).

    3. VDD_GPU: High-current graphics power rail feeding the PowerVR / Mali GPU core (~0.85V to 1.0V DC).

    4. VDD_GEN / VDD_SYS: Main internal digital infrastructure logic bus (~1.1V to 1.3V DC).

- High-Density Low-Dropout Regulators (LDOs):

  * Delivers clean, low-noise supply voltages for motherboard peripherals:

    - VDD_EMMC / VDD_UFS (1.8V / 2.8V / 3.0V for flash storage memory).

    - VDD_SIM1 / VDD_SIM2 (1.8V / 3.0V dual-SIM interfaces).

    - VDD_CAM (1.2V, 1.8V, 2.8V for front/rear camera analog and digital rails).

    - Touchscreen, display panel interface, and proximity/accelerometer sensors.

- Integrated Audio Subsystem & Codec:

  * Complete audio processing block: Multi-channel DAC, ADC, microphone pre-amplifiers, headset jack detection,

    and integrated loudspeaker/earpiece amplifier circuitry.

- Battery Charging & Power Path Subsystem:

  * Regulates 5.0V USB input (VBUS), manages linear / switching battery charge current, monitors battery temperature

via the NTC thermistor line (BATT_TEMP), and interfaces with the fuel gauge.

- Boot Sequencing & System Reset:

  * Monitors power button (PWRKEY) pull-down events, drives the 32.768 kHz real-time clock (RTC), handles power-hold

(PWR_HOLD) handshakes, and releases the primary system reset (RST_N) line to the processor.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Completely Dead Motherboard (Zero Current Draw / 0.000A):

  * Connecting the motherboard to a DC bench power supply and pressing the power button yields 0.000A or a

tiny 0.01A pulse that collapses back to zero (dead power-key pull-up line or missing RTC clock).

- Low Boot Current Freeze (Stuck at 0.04A to 0.09A):

  * Motherboard draws a steady 40mA–90mA upon pressing the power button and stays permanently frozen without

progressing to CPU boot. Indicates that initial system rails are present, but VDD_CORE or RST_N fails to release.

- Primary Short to Ground on VBAT (Power Supply Trips Immediately):

  * Internal high-side switching MOSFET breakdown shorts the battery power rail directly to ground (0.000V in

diode mode), causing the bench power supply to beep / trip instantly.

- Fake Charging / No Charging (Animation Appears, But Battery Drops):

  * Phone displays the lightning bolt or battery charging animation, but battery percentage freezes or drains

because the internal charging stage of SC2721G is blown.

- Phone Boot Loops at Brand Logo (Samsung / Realme / Itel):

  * Phone turns on, shows the initial brand logo, and restarts repeatedly due to an unstable VDD_CORE buck

inductor or corrupted feedback regulation inside SC2721G.

- Complete Audio Dead (Mic, Earpiece, and Loudspeaker Inoperative Simultaneously):

  * No ringtone, no ear speaker sound, and microphone fails to record, caused by a burned out internal audio

    codec section within SC2721G.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place the RED probe on ground (metal shield frame) and probe surrounding

      components with the BLACK probe:

      - Main Battery Line (VBAT Input Filter Capacitors): Normal reading is ~400mV to 550mV (0.000V indicates

        a primary short).

      - VDD_CORE Buck Inductor: Normal reading is ~80mV to 180mV (low core resistance is normal for the CPU cluster).

      - VDD_MEM / DDR Buck Inductor: Normal reading is ~220mV to 340mV.

      - VDD_GPU Buck Inductor: Normal reading is ~120mV to 220mV.

      - Peripheral LDO Capacitors (Storage, SIM, Display): Normal readings range from ~450mV to 650mV.

      - VBUS Input Filter (Near USB Line): Normal reading is ~500mV to 650mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Verification:

      - If VBAT or a buck coil reads 0.000V, apply rosin smoke across SC2721G and inject 3.8V DC (limited to 1.5A).

If SC2721G melts the rosin instantly, the IC is internally shorted.

B. Hot Testing (Operating Voltage Checks with DC Bench Supply at 4.0V):

   1. Connect motherboard to DC bench supply:

      - Check Power Button Line: Must measure ~3.8V to 4.0V pull-up to VBAT. Pressing the button must pull this to 0V.

      - Check Output Buck Coils During Power Press:

        * VDD_CORE buck coil must rise to ~0.85V – 1.05V DC.

        * VDD_MEM buck coil must output ~1.1V to 1.2V DC.

        * VDD_GPU buck coil must output ~0.85V to 1.0V DC.

      - If input voltage is present and the power button drops to 0V, but all buck coils remain at 0V, SC2721G is defective.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- BGA Package Handling:
