           UNISOC / SPREADTRUM SC2723G2 MAIN PMIC REWORK & DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Multi-Channel Synchronous Buck Regulators:

  * Generates primary low-voltage, high-current operating rails directly from VBAT (~3.8V):

    1. VDD_CORE / VDD_ARM: Powers the main Spreadtrum multi-core CPU cluster (~1.05V to 1.15V DC).

    2. VDD_MEM / VDD_DDR: Supplies the high-speed LPDDR2/LPDDR3 memory bus (~1.2V or 1.8V DC).

    3. VDD_GEN / VDD_SYS: Delivers system logic processing power (~1.1V to 1.3V DC).

- Multi-Channel Low-Dropout Linear Regulators (LDOs):

  * Regulates clean, stable voltages for peripherals:

    - VDD_EMMC / VDD_FLASH (1.8V / 2.8V / 3.0V for internal storage).

    - VDD_SIM1 / VDD_SIM2 (1.8V / 3.0V for dual SIM slots).

    - VDD_CAM / VDD_SENSOR (1.2V / 1.8V / 2.8V for camera modules and sensors).

- Integrated Audio Subsystem & Codec:

  * Features integrated digital-to-analog converters (DAC), analog-to-digital converters (ADC), stereo headphone

    drivers, microphone preamplifiers, and speaker output amplifiers without requiring a separate audio IC.

- Integrated Battery Charging & Gas Gauge:

  * Receives 5.0V VBUS from the Micro-USB port, manages CC/CV battery charging, monitors battery temperature

    via the NTC/BATT_TEMP pin, and controls the charging status handshake.

- Cold Boot Sequencing & Clock Generation:

  * Detects power key (PWRKEY) pull-down events, drives the 32.768 kHz real-time clock (RTC), and asserts

    system reset (RST_N) and power-hold (PWR_HOLD) handshakes with the application processor.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Completely Dead Phone (Zero Current Draw / 0.000A):

  * Connecting the motherboard to a DC bench power supply and pressing the power button yields 0.000A or a

    negligible 0.01A pulse that collapses back to 0 immediately (dead power-key pull-up or defective RTC).

- Low Boot Current Hang / Freeze (Stuck at 0.03A to 0.08A):

  * Motherboard draws a steady 30mA–80mA upon pressing the power button and stays frozen. Indicates the primary

    buck rail is attempting to start, but the CPU core rail (VDD_ARM) or reset signal (RST_N) fails to release.

- Primary Short to Ground on VBAT (DC Power Supply Trips Immediately):

  * Internal high-side switching transistor breakdown shorts the battery line directly to ground (0.000V in

    diode mode), causing the DC bench supply to cut off / beep instantly upon connection.

- No Charging / Fake Charging (Animation Shows but Battery Doesn't Increase):

  * Phone displays the charging lightning bolt icon, but battery percentage stays the same or drains because

    the internal linear charging circuit inside SC2723G2 has burned out.

- Complete Audio Failure (Mic, Earpiece, and Speaker Dead Simultaneously):

  * Microphone, earpiece, and ringer speaker all fail simultaneously, even after replacing the external buzzer

    and mic, because the internal audio codec block inside SC2723G2 is damaged.

- Phone Boot Loops at Samsung / Model Logo:

  * Phone powers on, displays the Samsung logo, and restarts in an endless loop due to an unstable VDD_CORE

    buck inductor or degraded feedback circuit inside the chip.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place RED probe on ground (metal shield / PCB ground) and probe the

      coils and capacitors surrounding SC2723G2 with the BLACK probe:

      - Main Battery Line (VBAT Input Capacitors): Normal diode reading is ~400mV to 550mV (0.000V indicates

        a primary dead short).

      - VDD_CORE / VDD_ARM Buck Inductor: Normal reading is ~100mV to 220mV.

      - VDD_MEM / DDR Buck Inductor: Normal reading is ~250mV to 350mV.

      - Peripheral LDO Capacitors (eMMC, SIM, Display): Normal readings range from ~450mV to 650mV.

      - VBUS Input Filter (Near USB Line): Normal reading is ~500mV to 650mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Verification:

      - If VBAT or a buck coil reads 0.000V with a continuous multimeter beep, apply rosin smoke over SC2723G2

        and inject 3.8V DC (limited to 1.5A) into VBAT to see if the IC melts the rosin immediately.

B. Hot Testing (Operating Voltage Checks with DC Bench Supply at 4.0V):

   1. Connect motherboard to DC bench supply:

      - Check Power Button Line: Must measure ~3.8V pull-up to VBAT. Pressing the power button must pull this

        voltage down to 0V.

      - Check Output Coils During Boot:

        * VDD_CORE buck coil must rise to ~1.05V – 1.15V DC.

        * VDD_MEM buck coil must output ~1.2V DC.

      - Check VBUS Line with 5V Charger plugged in: Must measure 5.0V at the input capacitor of SC2723G2. If

        5V is present at the input but battery connector voltage does not rise above 3.5V, the charging stage is dead.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Desoldering & Thermal Protection:

  * Position the motherboard in a PCB holder. Shield the nearby CPU and eMMC memory with heat-reflective

    aluminum tape and Kapton tape.

  * Apply a small amount of non-acidic RMA / NC-559 tacky flux around the perimeter of SC2723G2.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 320°C – 335°C, Airflow 30%–35%.

  * Apply heat uniformly in circular motions for 20–25 seconds. Gently touch the edge with micro-tweezers;

    once the solder balls liquefy, lift the IC straight up vertically.

- Motherboard Pad Cleaning:

  * Apply 183°C leaded solder paste (Sn63/Pb37) to the pads using a soldering iron at 280°C to lower the melting

    point of the residual factory solder.

  * Smooth and level all pads using fine copper desoldering wick and flux.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); check under a microscope to confirm no torn or

    bridged pads.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated Samsung J100H / SC2723 or universal 0.12mm BGA stencil.

  * Spread 183°C leaded solder paste evenly into the stencil holes using a spatula.

  * Reflow using hot air at 280°C with low airflow (15%) until uniform, bright spherical solder balls form.

- Installation & Alignment:

  * Apply a paper-thin layer of tacky flux over the cleaned motherboard pad array.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation dot on SC2723G2 with the silkscreen corner mark on the PCB.

  * Solder with hot air set to 300°C – 310°C and 25% airflow. The chip will automatically settle into perfect

    alignment through solder surface tension.

  * Allow the motherboard to cool down naturally for 3 to 5 minutes before connecting DC power for testing.
