SILICON MITUS SM5708 SWITCHING CHARGER IC REWORK & DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Synchronous Buck Switching Battery Charger:

  * Receives 5.0V DC from the USB VBUS input and steps it down efficiently to battery charging voltage

(3.6V to 4.35V) through an adjacent heavy-current power switching inductor (LX coil).

  * Automatically regulates Constant Current (CC) fast charge and Constant Voltage (CV) termination phases.

- Dynamic Power Path Management (VSYS):

  * Powers the main system logic rails (VSYS) directly from the USB adapter while simultaneously charging the

battery. This allows a phone with a completely drained or flat battery to turn on instantly when plugged in.

- Integrated Camera Flash LED Driver:

  * Houses a dedicated internal boost regulator and current sink to power the rear dual-tone camera flash and

the front selfie flash LED without requiring a separate flash driver IC.

- Battery Temperature & Safety Telemetry (I2C):

  * Interfaces with the battery NTC thermistor pin (BATT_TEMP) and communicates with the main application

processor over the I2C serial bus to report charging current, battery voltage, and thermal alerts.

- Hardware Protections:

  * Includes integrated Input Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), Reverse Current Blocking (prevents battery discharge

back into the USB port), Thermal Regulation, and Timer-Based Safety Fault Shutdown.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Phone Stuck in Charging Loop / Battery Circle Flashing:

  * Connecting the charger displays the empty battery circle icon, the screen turns black, and it immediately

loops and restarts. This is the #1 signature failure of a degraded SM5708 on Samsung J8 and A6+.

- Completely Dead Charging (Zero Current / 0.000A Draw):

  * When plugged into a USB tester, the meter reads 0.000A. The phone does not detect the charger, and no charging

animation appears (internal high-side pass-FET blown open).

- Fake Charging (Charging Icon Appears, But Battery Drops):

  * The screen shows the charging lightning bolt, but battery percentage stays frozen or drains downwards.

Caused by an open switching inductor (LX) or failed internal buck switching controller inside SM5708.

- Primary Short to Ground on VBAT / VSYS:

  * Internal power FET breakdown shorts the primary power rail directly to ground (0.000V in diode mode),

causing the DC bench power supply to beep / trip instantly when the battery line is connected.

- Rear or Front Flashlight Fails to Work:

  * Camera flashlight fails to turn on from the drop-down quick settings menu or camera app, caused by a burned

out LED driver section inside SM5708.

- Severe Motherboard Overheating:

  * SM5708 gets scalding hot to the touch within 5 to 10 seconds of inserting the USB charging cable.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place RED probe on ground (metal shield frame) and probe surrounding

      components with the BLACK probe:

      - VBUS Input Capacitor (Directly from USB port): Normal reading is ~500mV to 650mV (0.000V indicates

a blown OVP diode or shorted SM5708 input).

      - VBAT / VSYS Filter Capacitors: Normal reading is ~380mV to 480mV (0.000V indicates a dead short).

      - Switching Buck Inductor (LX Coil): Measure both sides of the large coil beside SM5708. Both sides must

read ~380mV to 460mV. An "OL" (open line) reading on one side indicates a cracked or de-soldered coil.

      - Flash LED Anode / Cathode Lines: Normal readings are ~500mV to 700mV.

      - I2C Bus Lines (SCL / SDA): Normal readings are ~420mV to 550mV (both lines must be balanced within 10mV).

   2. Short-Circuit Verification:

      - If VBAT or VSYS reads 0.000V, apply rosin smoke across SM5708 and inject 3.8V DC (limited to 1.5A).

If SM5708 melts the rosin instantly, it is shorted and must be replaced.

B. Hot Testing (Operating Voltage Checks with 5V Charger Connected):

   1. Plug in a 5.0V charger with an inline USB power meter:

      - Check VBUS Input: Measure 5.0V DC at the input decoupling capacitor of SM5708.

      - Check LX Switching Inductor: Voltage must be active, outputting ~3.8V to 4.35V DC to the battery.

      - If 5.0V is entering SM5708 but 0V is found on the LX inductor and the phone draws 0.00A on the USB meter,

        SM5708 is defective.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- BGA Package Handling:

  * SM5708 is a compact BGA chip. Surrounding high-power copper planes absorb heat quickly, requiring steady,

    even preheating.

- Desoldering & Thermal Protection:

  * Shield surrounding plastic connectors (battery connector, LCD FPC, SIM slot) with heat-reflective aluminum

    tape and Kapton tape.

  * Apply a small amount of non-corrosive RMA / NC-559 tacky flux around the perimeter of SM5708.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 320°C – 335°C, Airflow 25%–30%.

  * Apply circular heat for 18–22 seconds. Touch the corner lightly with precision micro-tweezers; as soon as

it moves freely, lift it straight up vertically.

- Motherboard Pad Cleaning:

  * Apply 183°C leaded solder wire (Sn63/Pb37) to the motherboard pads using a soldering iron at 280°C to dilute

    high-temp factory solder.

  * Level all pads smooth and flat using quality copper desoldering braid and flux.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect under a microscope to ensure no torn or

    bridged copper pads.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated Samsung SM5708 / SM5703 or universal 0.12mm BGA stencil.

  * Spread 183°C fine-grain leaded solder paste evenly into the stencil apertures.

  * Reflow using hot air at 280°C and low airflow (15%) until uniform, bright spherical solder balls form.

- Installation & Alignment:

  * Apply an ultra-thin layer of tacky flux over the cleaned motherboard pad footprint.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation index dot on SM5708 precisely with the silkscreen corner mark on the PCB.

  * Reflow using hot air at 305°C – 315°C with 20% airflow. Solder surface tension will automatically center the chip.

  * Allow the motherboard to cool down naturally for 3 minutes before testing charging and flashlight operation.
