           SAMSUNG SPU16 (S2MPU16) SECONDARY SUB-PMIC REWORK & DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Multi-Channel Synchronous Buck Regulators:

  * Receives primary system voltage (VSYS / VBAT 3.8V–4.2V) and steps it down via external miniature SMD

power inductors to supply core low voltages (~0.8V to 1.35V) for peripheral processing logic.

- High-Density Integrated LDO Regulators:

  * Houses dedicated analog and digital Low-Dropout (LDO) regulators providing clean, low-noise power rails:

    - Display Power Rails: Provides control and biasing voltages for the Super AMOLED 120Hz display panel.

    - Camera Multi-Sensor Rails: Supplies analog (AVDD), digital (DVDD), and I/O (IOVDD) voltages for the

50MP main sensor, ultra-wide, and macro camera modules.

    - Sensor Hub & Connectivity Rails: Powers gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light, and fingerprint sensors.

- Digital Interfacing & Power Sequencing (I2C / SPMI):

  * Controlled directly by the Exynos application processor and coordinated with the primary PMIC (S2MPB03).

  * Automatically coordinates power-up sequencing: if SPU16 fails to report Power Good (PG), the processor

    halts the boot cycle.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Phone Dead / Low Current Freeze (0.05A – 0.15A Boot Hang):

  * When connected to a DC power supply and pressing the power button, current jumps to ~60mA–120mA and

freezes completely (the main PMIC starts, but the boot sequence aborts because SPU16 fails to output secondary rails).

- Primary / Secondary Short Circuit to Ground:

  * Internal FET puncture connects the VSYS line or a buck output line directly to ground (0.000V in diode mode),

causing the bench power supply to trip or beep immediately.

- Black Screen / No Display (Phone Boots & Vibrates):

  * The phone turns on, vibrates, rings, and receives calls, but the AMOLED screen remains completely black

because SPU16 display LDOs fail to activate screen bias voltages.

- Camera App Crash / "Warning: Camera Failed":

  * Launching the camera app results in a black screen, an immediate crash, or "Camera Failed" error due to

missing camera AVDD/DVDD rails generated by SPU16.

- Severe Motherboard Overheating & Fast Battery Drain:

  * SPU16 becomes scorching hot under the thermal camera or to the touch within 5 seconds of connecting power,

often caused by liquid damage penetrating under the BGA package.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place the RED probe on ground (metal motherboard frame) and probe

surrounding components with the BLACK probe:

      - SPU16 Input Filter Capacitors (VSYS / VBAT line): Normal reading is ~380mV to 480mV. (0.000V indicates a dead short).

      - Buck Power Coils around SPU16: Measure both sides of each miniature SMD inductor:

        * Normal readings range from ~300mV to 450mV.

      - LDO Output Capacitors (Small 0201 / 0402 SMD caps around SPU16):

        * Normal readings range from ~400mV to 650mV.

      - I2C Communication Lines: Normal reading is ~450mV to 580mV on both clock and data lines.

   2. Short-Circuit Detection (Rosin / Thermal Method):

      - If any buck coil or VSYS capacitor around SPU16 reads 0.000V, apply rosin smoke across the chip.

      - Inject 1.2V DC (limited to 1.5A) into the shorted coil or 3.8V into the VSYS rail. If SPU16 melts the

rosin immediately, the IC is internally shorted and must be removed.

B. Hot Testing (Operating Voltage Checks with Motherboard Powered via DC Supply):

   1. Connect motherboard to bench DC supply and trigger power button:

      - Check Input Rail: Must measure steady 3.8V–4.2V DC on input capacitors.

      - Check Buck Coils: Must measure stable voltages (~0.85V, 1.05V, 1.2V, 1.35V).

      - Check Camera / Display LDOs: Trigger screen on or camera app; output capacitors should show 1.8V, 2.8V,

and 3.0V DC. If input voltage is present but multiple output rails remain at 0V, SPU16 is defective.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- BGA Package Handling:

  * SPU16 is a high-density, fine-pitch BGA package situated under the middle motherboard shielding frame.

- Thermal Protection & Pre-Heating:

  * Protect the nearby Exynos CPU and UFS storage using dual-layer thermal Kapton tape covered by thick

    heat-reflective aluminum tape.

  * In modern multi-layer Samsung motherboards, the internal ground planes absorb substantial heat. Preheating

the board from underneath at 120°C–140°C on a heating plate is recommended.

- Desoldering Parameters:

  * Apply a small amount of non-corrosive RMA / NC-559 tacky flux around SPU16.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 345°C, Airflow 25%–30%.

  * Apply heat evenly in circular motions for 20–25 seconds. Touch the corner with micro-tweezers; as soon

as it floats freely on molten solder, lift it vertically without touching adjacent miniature SMD capacitors.

- Motherboard Pad Cleaning:

  * Apply 183°C leaded solder wire (Sn63/Pb37) to the motherboard pads using a soldering iron at 280°C to dilute

    the high-temperature factory lead-free solder.

  * Gently wick away all excess solder using quality copper desoldering braid and flux until the PCB pads

    are completely flat and smooth.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect under a microscope to confirm no torn

    or bridged copper pads.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated Samsung Exynos / SPU16 stencil or high-precision universal BGA stencil (0.12mm thickness).

  * Spread 183°C fine-grain leaded solder paste evenly into the apertures.

  * Reflow using hot air at 280°C and low airflow (15%) until bright spherical solder balls form across all pads.

- Installation:

  * Apply an ultra-thin layer of tacky flux over the cleaned motherboard footprint.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation index dot on SPU16 precisely with the silkscreen corner mark on the PCB.

  * Reflow using hot air at 310°C – 320°C with 20% airflow. Watch the chip automatically pull into center

alignment via molten solder surface tension.

  * Allow the motherboard to cool down naturally for 3–5 minutes before connecting battery or testing boot current.
